How to get a free AOL BYOA account:
1. Firstly you need to download AOL VR from here.
2. When it has finished downloading and about to install it will ask if you're a new or existing, select new.
3. Once installed hit next and fill in the forms (use some random phone number and zip code) and whenever you get to payment, select VISA and hit next.
4. Then click on the cancel link at the left and you will get a new window popup.. follow the instructions and select your new screename!
Optional: If you want to enter chatrooms, you need to give AOL a credit card number and they will take out about 50P and then refund it. When I tried this they didn't even take any money out.

Helping decide a new Internet Service Provider:
Martin wanted to leave AOL so I made this tutorial mainly for him.
If you're sick of your current ISP then the following is my advice.
Have a visit to DSL ZoneUK and read the ISP ratings page were it has people rating their own ISP and giving a comment.
Then head over to ThinkBroadband and join the forums where you can find forums specially made for most ISPs.
Deciding on an ISP is not easy as there are so many these days and alot specify unlimited usage but then have a * beside it indicating they have a fair usage policy. I also recommend downloading DU Meter to check your bandwidth usage for each month and that will give you a good idea of what package you need. Also consider the following points:
Cost: how much am I prepared to pay
Will I need a static IP? it may come it useful at some stage
What monthly bandwidth do I use?
What speed do I need? up to 8mbit maxdsl or would I be happy with say... 2mbit?
Also consider joining an office package rather than a home package to get faster upload
Always read the small print and find out what the contract length is because the last thing you want is a 18 months contract of hell! |
